Supporting Success in the Sixth Form

At Bishop Ramsey School, we are committed to helping every Sixth Form student thrive both academically and personally. We recognise that the transition to Sixth Form brings increased independence, higher academic expectations and new responsibilities. Our support systems are designed to identify concerns at an early stage, provide timely intervention and equip students with the skills, resilience and habits needed for long-term success.

Students are supported through a combination of pastoral care, academic mentoring and regular progress monitoring. Form Tutors play a central role in getting to know each student, monitoring attendance, punctuality, wellbeing and academic engagement, and acting as the first point of contact for students and parents. Form Tutors will also have one to one meetings regularly with their tutees throughout the year to help with things like revision, study plans and preparing for life after Year 13.

Where concerns arise regarding attendance, punctuality, organisation, engagement or wellbeing, students may be placed on a Pastoral Improvement Plan (PIP). This structured process identifies specific areas for development and provides targeted support, clear expectations and regular review meetings.

Where a student requires additional support in a particular subject, a Subject Improvement Plan (SIP) may be implemented. Subject teachers work closely with students to identify barriers to learning and agree personalised strategies to improve performance. These may include additional independent study, attendance at intervention sessions, improved completion of assignments, revision support or the development of more effective study habits.

Both support pathways begin with the Form Tutor and may involve subject teachers, the Head of Year and, where appropriate, the Deputy Headteacher responsible for Sixth Form. Individual targets are agreed with the student and reviewed over a fixed period, typically two weeks. Progress is monitored carefully and support is adapted according to need.

Where targets are achieved, students are recognised for their progress and come off the support plan. Where concerns remain, further interventions may be introduced, including more frequent monitoring, parental meetings, mentoring, study support programmes or additional guidance from senior staff.

Alongside these formal support processes, students benefit from a wide range of guidance on study skills, time management, wellbeing, university applications, apprenticeships and career planning. We encourage students to reflect on their progress, take ownership of their learning and seek support whenever it is needed.

Through this structured, supportive and collaborative approach, we aim to ensure that every student is empowered to achieve their potential, develop confidence and independence, and make the most of the opportunities available during their Sixth Form journey at Bishop Ramsey School.
