Bishop Ramsey is delighted to have been awarded first prize in a national secondary school competition which invited students across twenty regions to promote awareness of the effect of plastic pollution in the world’s oceans and become Ocean Influencers of the future.

Year 10 Art and Design students created Bruce, the atrium-living, plastic bottle collecting shark, as part of Bishop Ramsey’s campaign to raise awareness of the use of plastic in Bishop Ramsey as well as the danger of plastics and microplastics which are such a threat to marine life.

Students across the school were invited to submit a written account about why we should protect the oceans. Many congratulations to Safiya (Year 9), who submitted the winning entry. Her beautiful poem “My Ocean” describes the challenges to marine life and sensitively highlights the beauty of the world’s oceans. Safiya’s winning poem and the other highly commended essays can be seen on the Eco notice board in the Humanities corridor.

The final part of the competition was the informative presentation created by the Eco Team (which involved students from Year 7-12).
Huge congratulations to all who participated in this competition and especially to the Eco team who have regularly attended this year. A big thank you to Mr McGinnes, the Art Department and Mrs Fletcher for their support as well.

The prize includes a trip for 20 students to the Lizard Peninsula in Cornwall to learn how to dive with PADI diving instructors and our winners will complete the PADI Open Water Diving qualification, as well as enjoy a week of outdoor beach activities and a fun visit to Skywire based at the Eden Project and which has England’s longest and fastest zipwire.

Bishop Ramsey is delighted to support raising awareness of the challenges facing our world’s oceans and the Eco Team will continue to do this next year.
