Year 10 Students 'Speak Out'!

On Friday 20th October, all Y10 students participated in a workshop event, sponsored by the Jack Petchey Foundation. Trainers from Speakers Trust came and worked with the students to help them to plan and deliver a short presentation on an issue of their choice, which they performed at the end of the day, without notes.
Many students went way out of their comfort zone, speaking openly in front of their peers and teachers, bravely tackling topics like social media, politics, immigration and ignorance. Nearly all of them found that their confidence rose enormously and they enjoyed the way the talk was broken down into stages for them during the day, making what initially seemed intimidating, achievable for them.
Comments from the students were positive, including ‘the trainer encourages you to step out of your comfort zone to speak in front of your peers’ and ‘I liked how it helped me come out of my shell’
Each form group had a winner, who will now go on to deliver their speech in assembly on 22nd November. They are practising hard to polish their talks and compete against each other. A grand finalist will be picked from these six students, to represent Bishop Ramsey School in the regional finals for Hillingdon, competing against other local schools.
It’s great to have our Y10 students raising their game so much, finding that their voice is important and that they can make it heard in a positive way.
